Born in 1928, Cordelia was the daughter of the philanthropist Sarah Cordelia
Mellon Scaife and industrialist Alan Magee Scaife. 

Cordelia, the younger of two children, hailed from the renowned Mellon family. Her lineage
was associated with economic influence and charitable endeavors, setting a
precedent that she would follow throughout her life. Her mother, Sarah, donated
millions to various causes, from environmental conservation to medical
research, establishing a legacy of generosity that Cordelia inherited. 

Despite her affluent upbringing, Cordelia led a reserved life. Her personal trials,
including a divorce, further shaped her character, making her determined to
extend the family’s philanthropic tradition. 

Cordelia Scaife May’s dedication to environmental causes was a significant part of her
philanthropic journey. She was passionate about preserving American Indian
archaeological sites and donated much of her property for this purpose.

The Colcom Foundation, Cordelia’s brainchild, was central to her charitable
endeavors. In her will, Cordelia left all her personal possessions and real
estate to this foundation. The Colcom Foundation, recognized for its commitment
to environmental sustainability, became the steward of Cordelia’s legacy. 

Cordelia Scaife May’s philanthropic influence extended beyond geographical boundaries. Her
properties in Hawaii were donated to conservation organizations, while land she
owned in Virginia was used to support health initiatives. 

Cordelia passed away in 2005, leaving behind a legacy of charitable contributions and
environmental stewardship. Her brother, Richard Scaife, remembered her as
someone deeply committed to various causes. Cordelia’s philanthropic
initiatives continue to inspire a myriad of organizations that carry forth her
enduring legacy.
